If you have never fasted before, start small and build up and even conduct your fast with others (such as a friend, a group, or your church).Įffective fasting always involves personal sacrifice in order to spend more time with God. Also, set a plan that includes the length of time (a meal, a day, a week, a month, etc.) as well as how you will strategically spend time with God during your fast. So before you decide how to fast, ask the Holy Spirit to help you clarify WHY you are fasting, such as for spiritual renewal, guidance, healing, grace for a difficulty, the salvation of a loved one, or something else. But how you fast is not as important as the heart behind it. Jesus implied that His followers should fast (Matthew 6:16-18 9:14-15). To help you make your time of fasting and prayer successful, meaningful, and rewarding, this guide contains suggestions on how to begin, what to do, and how to end your fast properly. Many Christians do not fast because they do not know much about it, they have never been challenged to fast, or they are not sure they can. But how you conduct your fast affects its success. The power of fasting along with prayer is like a weapon that God has given us to destroy strongholds of evil and bring a spiritual movement.
